The completion of the tunnel renewal on the A10 motorway between Golling and Werfen marks the successful conclusion of a major infrastructure project in Austria in recent decades. The renovation of the approximately 14-kilometre-long tunnel chain includes the following tunnel systems:
- Ofenau Tunnel
- Hiefler Tunnel
- Brentenberg Tunnel
- Helberg Tunnel
- Zetzenberg Tunnel
Construction began in September 2022 and the tunnels were opened to traffic on schedule in June 2025. One focus of the project was on the modern tunnel equipment. Around 700 control cabinets were manufactured and delivered for our client SPIE Dürr Austria GmbH between 2023 and 2025 to control the entire safety, lighting and ventilation technology. A total of approx. 2,500 LED lights were installed, 64 high-performance fans fitted, over 400 video cameras installed and 100 new emergency call points created for the entire modernisation of this tunnel chain. In addition, more than 800 kilometres of cables for power, data and control ensure the smooth operation of the tunnel system. Their operating and safety technology has also been raised to a new level: A modern tunnel control system in the St. Michael im Lungau based traffic management centre controls automated detection systems for smoke, fire and traffic disruptions. Improved escape route markings and emergency lighting increase safety for all road users.
The technical realisation of the tunnel equipment was carried out in close cooperation with our customer Spie Dürr, a leading supplier of tunnel and traffic technology. As a reliable supply partner, BT-Systems GmbH made a significant contribution to the success of the project with its high-precision manufacturing and accurate delivery of electrotechnical components.
With the completion of the Golling-Werfen tunnel chain, a pioneering infrastructure project was realised on schedule and at the highest technical level - an important milestone for the safety and efficiency of the Austrian road network.
